Dreams

Dreams are funny things aren’t they?
So what if you dream about something that would normally make you feel very guilty if you had thought about it consciously? Are you supposed to feel guilty because you dreamed about it? Is it something that you actually want which is settled deep in your subconscious so you dream about it? And because it’s in your subconscious and you want it anyway, you should feel guilty about it.
Or is it just something that came by and because it’s a dream it has no parallel with your reality and the person that you are. I mean you don’t control your dreams so well why trouble yourself over it?
Really, what should you do? And believe?

I loved the pic too. It's one of my favourites. Wanted to put it everywhere as my display pic, but it doesn't look that good.
What about what I worte dear student of psychology?

On a slightly different line of thought...Does happiness in a dream matter? Does it count? What makes the reality of a dream less real than the reality of "real" life? Who defines what is real? Could the two "realities" exist parallely?

Freudian. What you've written, I mean.

When you put it like that Saptarshi it does make you wonder. If you don't put much emphasis on happiness in a dream why should you bother yourself when you do something in your dreams that makes you guilty? However, you can't feel guilty when you're feeling happy [unless it's at someone else's expense], so why would you feel guilty about it even if you dreamed about it? At the most you'd just be happy.
So then, does it count?
I think everyone has their own personal definitions of real. That’s why we have psychopaths.
For now, I’d define reality as something experienced consciously.
And so if that's reality then what occurs in a dream is less or not real because it's something you experience subconsciously.
And then you really can't call them both realities, but both can exist in parallel; I mean they do anyway - the conscious and subconscious.
I’m not sure if I make a lot of sense, but what do you think Saptarshi, and you Ate?

Freudian.

And they do exist parallely - the conscious and sub-conscious.

But when you are dreaming(in your sleep i presume)you are depending on your subconscious mind as much as you do on your conscious mind when you are awake. So at that moment, when you are in a dream it IS your reality. At that moment anything but that reality is unreal.Like you call your dream unreal when you are awake and in your conscious state of mind.

So my point is, sub conscious mind has over the ages been undermined. The very name is derogatory.Who says that a sub conscious mind is any less than the conscious?

Are we in a position to decide which is more important?

Hmm, I just had a dream last night, so well, about what you've said saptarshi, although when you're dreaming you depend on your subconscious mind as much as you depend on your conscious mind when you're awake- the experience of a dream is relatively short lived.
I had a dream last night about being a truck driver who had to drive a lot of people [who I knew] through dangerous curving mountain roads and I had to burn something to make headlights and I hadn't been told and so we were trying to figure it out and it was all very dangerous. Finally we used torches, but by the time the batteries started running out and they began dimming I had woken up. Now strangely that dream was very real for that time, but once I wake up, it really isn't very 'real' is it?
And well, who and what I interact with in my dream doesn't affect my life on a daily basis with the world around me, so I can't really call it very real then.
But I don't think the subconscious mind is something dergatory at all. In fact if anything, I'm afraid of it. I can control what goes on consciously, but I really don't have much control over my sub conscious mind. And if that's really a projection of what my deepest desires are it is scary. That's why should you feel guilty about something you were doing in a dream as it was really a projection of your own sub conscious[you]. Or does it really not matter?
And as for the last, I think I really can't decide which is more important.
Hey Bhagwan! I don't think I make much sense anymore.

"And well, who and what I interact with in my dream doesn't affect my life on a daily basis"

So here you are making an assumption again. That 'life' consists only of the moments when conscious mind is in control i.e.when we are awake...I dont think we are in a position say even this...

Lúthien Táralóm said...

Technically you're correct. Considering we haven't progressed enough to figure out whether our subconscious actually affects our life on a daily basis. But it doesn't really 'seem' to.
Wouldn't you agree on that?

Unknown said...

No.I wouldnt. Why would I? Like Science has no reason to believe that subconscious affects our 'actual life' it has no reason to disbelieve it either. So why allow myself to think something just because millions of people have thought of it that way...why surrender to social conditioning?

Lúthien Táralóm said...

It's not surrendering to social conditioning if you've thought about it and then believed it. Just because society believes something which happens to be something you belive doesn't make you socially conditioned. Neither does the fact, since it is socially believed make it crap.
I just asked what you thought. Not society. They can think whatever they like, though I'm not sure if they think very much at all.
